Dr Deidre Koolen-Bourke

PhD, LLM (hons), LLB(hons), BA/BSc

Deidre has a BA (Anthropology) and BSc (Conservation biology), as well as an LLB (Hons) and LLM (with First Class, First Division honours) in Environmental Law from the University of Auckland. Her PhD examined the law reform process and legal system’s response to social and environmental change, with a particular focus on the interface between law, science and culture. Deidre was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court in 2006 and has published in the areas of indigenous rights, animal law and landscape protection.

Deidre is the lead researcher for EDS’s Conservation Law Reform Project and is also investigating how science is utilised to inform policy, as part of a Think Piece for the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge.  Deidre represents EDS on the New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy Group.
