Barry Barton

Barry is a Professor of Law at the University of Waikato and Director of the Centre for Environmental, Resources and Energy Law (CEREL) in Te Piringa, the Faculty of Law. He is the New Zealand member of the Academic Advisory Group of the Section of Energy and Natural Resources Law of the International Bar Association. He has particular connections with Copenhagen University, Bremen University, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Calgary. He has been a member of the University of Waikato Council for eight years.

His general field of research is energy, natural resources, and environmental law. In recent years he has focussed on regulation in the energy sector, mining and oil and gas law, water, climate change, energy efficiency and demand management, and political theory underlining environmental and resources law. He has recently worked on projects for new law for carbon capture and storage, geothermal mineral development, and the energy performance of rental properties.
