Fisheries management review nears completion
EDS is nearing completion of its project to investigate the operation of our fisheries management system – with a focus on case study areas in the Hauraki Gulf, Kaipara Harbour, Marlborough Sounds and Tasman and Golden Bays. The project has been funded by the Department of Conservation and Ministry for the Environment and involved around 60 in-depth interviews with commercial fishers, recreational fishers and others involved in the operation of the management system on the ground.
Although the research has identified broad support for the quota management system, it has also uncovered some significant problems with its operation, and these need to be urgently addressed.
EDS will be holding a public launch for the report later this year.
