Last Line of Defence

Last month EDS Senior Policy Analyst Dr Marie Brown toured the country speaking to several RMLA branches about the latest EDS report Last Line of Defence – compliance, monitoring and enforcement of New Zealand’s environmental law. The report tracks how environmental enforcement regimes are working on the ground across a wide range of agencies.

Sold out roadshows in the North Island and great attendance in the south demonstrated a keen interest in improving this important but often overlooked part of the policy cycle. The report was launched on the 28th of February at an event sponsored by the Wellington branch of the Resource Management Law Association and Simpson Grierson. Limited copies are still available and can be purchased via the EDS website here.

EDS would like to give sincere thanks to the RMLA for the Roadshow and to the New Zealand Law Foundation, the Ministry for the Environment and FoundationFootprint Ltd for their generous support for the project.

If environmental laws can be breached with impunity, public confidence is lost.
