Kermadec Oceans Sanctuary Challenge
The Seafood Industry has issued High Court actions challenging the Government’s proposal to create a large marine reserve around the Kermadecs. This reserve would cover 15% of New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
New Zealand fishers (or at least quota holders – they are not always the same) have a history of being litigious but these proceedings are a step up from the norm: they are challenging the ability of Parliament to make laws, so there are some big constitutional issues in play.
EDS is taking legal advice and intends to apply to join the proceedings in support of what is the biggest conservation gain in our oceans ever.
We have written to the Prime Minister asking for the current review of the Quota Management System to be expanded beyond its narrow technical parameters to examine the fundamental underpinnings of the QMS and fisheries management.
